Bullying/Harassment and Safety Reporting

In cooperation with the governing police department, NewHope will make every effort to investigate and respond to the reported incident. This includes immediate intervention strategies for protecting the victim from additional bullying or retaliation, and includes notification to parents of the victim, or reported victim, of bullying and the parents of the alleged perpetrator, and, if appropriate, notification to law enforcement officials.</span ></span ></p > <p style="text-align: justify;" ><span style="font-size:16px;" ><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;" >The General Assembly enacted an anti-bullying law (Public Act 096-0952) on June 28, 2010. The law defines “bullying” as:</span ></span ></p > <p style="text-align: justify;" ><span style="font-size:16px;" ><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;" ><em >Any severe or pervasive physical or verbal act or conduct, including communications made in writing or electronically, directed toward a student or students that has or can be reasonably predicted to have the effect of one or more of the following:</em ></span ></span ></p > <ul > <li style="text-align: justify;" ><span style="font-size:16px;" ><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;" ><em >Placing the student or students in reasonable fear of harm to the student’s personal property</em ></span ></span ></li > <li style="text-align: justify;" ><span style="font-size:16px;" ><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;" ><em >Causing a substantially detrimental effect on the student’s physical or mental health</em ></span ></span ></li > <li style="text-align: justify;" ><span style="font-size:16px;" ><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;" ><em >Substantially interfering with the student’s academic performance</em ></span ></span ></li > <li style="text-align: justify;" ><span style="font-size:16px;" ><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;" ><em >Substantially interfering with the student’s ability to participate in/or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by a school</em ></span ></span ></li > </ul > <p style="text-align: justify;" ><span style="font-size:16px;" ><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;" >Our responsibility is to create and maintain a safe environment that fosters healthy physical, psychological, and intellectual development for children. We must do all that we can to prevent peer abuse from occurring at school. Therefore, NewHope has a zero-tolerance policy regarding bullying and any type of harassment, and every report of bullying/harassment will be taken seriously.</span ></span ></p > <p style="text-align: justify;" ><span style="font-size:16px;" ><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;" >NewHope will not tolerate intimidating or harassing conduct, whether verbal, physical, or visual that affects tangible benefits of education, that unreasonably interferes with a student’s educational performance, or that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment. Unacceptable behaviors are defined by the receiver. Once it is known that a certain behavior is offensive to a particular individual, it must be stopped. This policy applies to all forms of harassing behavior including offensive jokes and remarks regarding one’s sexual, racial, and ethnic orientation as well as making an issue of any disability or difference. Continuous harassment will result in termination of services.</span ></span ></p > <p style="text-align: justify;" ><span style="font-size:16px;" ><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;" >Spreading hurtful or demeaning material, even if the material was created by another person (i.e., forwarding offensive emails, pictures, or text messages), is considered cyberbullying and will not be tolerated. Parents are strongly encouraged to monitor their student’s social media activity, as needed.</span ></span ></p > <p style="text-align: justify;" ><span style="font-size:16px;" ><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;" >Sexual harassment of students is prohibited. A person engages in sexual harassment whenever they make sexual advances, requests sexual favors, and/or engages in other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual or sex-based nature. Continuous sexual harassment will result in termination of services.</span ></span ></p > <p style="text-align: justify;" ><span style="font-size:16px;" ><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;" >The terms “intimidating,” “hostile,” and “offensive” include conduct that has the effect of humiliation, embarrassment, and/or discomfort. Examples of sexual harassment include invading personal space, touching, crude jokes or pictures, discussion of sexual experiences, teasing related to sexual characteristics, and spreading rumors related to a person’s alleged sexual activities.</span ></span ></p > <p style="text-align: justify;" ><span style="font-size:16px;" ><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif;" >NewHope will maintain written records of all incidents of bullying and their resolution for one school year.
